Factors such as uncertain job prospects, publication and funding pressures and increasing workloads can contribute to and exacerbate common mental health issues among academics. Psychological distress among academics is comparable to high risk occupational groups, such as healthcare workers, with almost 40% of academics experiencing a common mental health issue (e.g. depression). Research higher degree students are also at heightened risk [3], with 1 in 3 experiencing a mental health issue.
As such, Universities and other higher education institutions need to embody proactive approaches to the prevention, promotion and management of workplace mental health for the benefit of their staff, students and their broader communities.
